Gloucester Old Spots
We added Gloucester Old Spots to our farm in 2010 and are excited to be offering breeding stock and meat products from this very old and rare heritage breed.
The Gloucestershire Old Spots is a black and white breed that is predominantly white in color with a heavy drooped ear, scooped out face, and as their name would suggest, black-spotting.
Gloucestershire Old Spots originated in the Berkeley Valley region of England and from there spread throughtout the UK and the remainder of the world.
The origin of the breed is unknown but is probably from the native stock of the area along with introductions of other various breeds along the way.
The Old Spots are medium-sized pigs, and at one time, were called the Orchard Pig or Cottage Pig. They were commonly raised on waste agricultural products of the area such as windfall orchard fruit and whey.

Old wives-tales suggest that their black spotting was the result of fruit falling and bruising them as they roamed the fruit orchards they commonly foraged in.
Gloucestershire Old Spots are said to be good foragers, which is not surprising considering the type of feeding practiced in the original home of the breed during its early development.
GOS sows of the breed are known for large litters and high milk production. They have an easy-going attitude and are not aggressive.
We currently are producing red-group sows and boars and hope to be adding some black and green group production as well in the next year.
